These Makeup Trends Will Dominate the Year

By Maya Allen, Marie Claire

As times change, so do our beauty habits. Take a walk down makeup memory lane with me for a minute and think about it: The way you did your makeup in 2010 versus 2020 is very different, and probably makes you feel all the feels. Thank goodness for growth, and cringe-worthy pictures to prove how far you've come.

The onset of a fresh decade means there are new and exciting things to do to your face! It's ironic that this is a "trends" post, because I personally don't believe makeup has ever been about following the rules. More so than ever before, it's about embracing experimentation, and simply doing you. Wear that bright lipstick color, try that bold liner lewk, wear crystals and glitter when you feel like it. Why? Because you can.

I tapped four celebrity makeup artists who inspire me with their endless creativity to share their 2020 trend forecast. Ash Holm, Etienne Ortega, Keita Moore, and Adam Burrell, who are all artists to the stars (with a roster that includes the Kardashians, Paris Hilton, Ariana Grande, Iman, Ava Duverney, and more) get into looks you need to try this year. Take notes.

Glass Skin

Moore's favorite trend that's here to stay is glowing, glass skin, which you can achieve by slathering a mixture of moisturizers, cream highlighters, and oils to beam your face up. "I like to use strobe cream after moisturizing, but before foundation to give the skin a lit-from-within glow," Moore suggests. "Also, make sure to only use setting powders in certain areas on the face so your skin doesn’t look too oily."

Feathered, Fluffy Brows

R.I.P. to the days of drawing on your brows like your life depends on it. Embracing undone, lived-in, full brows is the wave now. "Brows are starting to look more like brows and less like cartoons," Ortega confirms. "People are getting into the groove of using brow pens to mimic their natural hair with beautiful shapes."

Burrell agrees, adding that the popularity of innovative brow treatments like Brow Laminations are making "Instagram Brows" are a thing of the past. Moore's also into feathered brows and uses an unexpected trick to get them: "I create feathered brows by using soap, which is an old school Hollywood trick," says Moore. "I like to pair a precise angled brush with a brow pomade and make hairlike strokes through the brow, which really gives the brow a fuller, more precise look. Then, I take a product by SoapBrows, which is soap in a container, and rub it through the brows with a mascara wand for a feathered effect."

Floating Eyeliner

Instead of traditional black eyeliner looks, Holm's expecting see lots of lots of floating liner...in bright colors. "To create the eyeliner shade you've ever dreamed of, all you need is a white eyeliner pencil and a sharp angled brush," Holm explains. "Gently press a bright eyeshadow into the shape you create with an eyeshadow color of your choice."

Colorblocking

Monochromatic makeup was the move in 2019, but what about the opposite? Intentional color-blocking with vivid shades is another cool way to experiment with color. "Whether it’s pairing a blue eyeshadow with an orange lip, or using a popping green shadow with a pink blush, try having more fun with color," Moore encourages. "This look I created for Adut Aketch at the British Fashion Awards incorporated a brown lip, Urban Decay Green Eyeliner in Overdrive, Urban Decay Moondust Shadow in Zodiac, and MAC Cosmetics Extra Dimensional Blush in Wrapped Candy."

Ortega is also a proponent of more color. "For a while, people were scared to use color," he says. "I’ve always loved color and I love that everyone is starting to embrace it more—whether it’s a pop of color on the eyes. or a bare eye and a bright lip, it’s makeup! It’s supposed to be fun yet gorgeous!

Watercolor Eyes

You might as well start getting your makeup ready for spring. "Using a soft blending brush, take a pastel pink blush or eyeshadow and pop it into the eyelid and crease of your eyes," Holm instructs. "Use the blending brush to create a soft hue of color that wraps around your eyes. You can also use lilacs and lavender eyeshadows."

Blown-Out Blush

"Try wearing popping blush in pinks and corals to make a statement," says Burrell. "And not just on the apples of the cheeks, but also high on the cheeks, into the temples, and diffusing into the eyeshadow."

Fresh Skin and Accent Inner-Corners

A little bit of color goes a long way. "Keep your makeup fresh by focusing on clean skin and a neutral eye," Holm explains. "To keep your skin fresh and glossy, prep with Cover FX's Brightening Booster Drops ($45) followed by Cover FX's Power Play Concealer ($30) and Foundation ($44) for a flawless finish. Then, add a pop of color to the inner-corners of your eyes. Adding a color in the tear duct of your eyes is just enough edge to make your makeup pop."

Glitter and Crystals

"Euphoria had a big, influential makeup moment in 2019 and more people will get on board with daring makeup looks, carrying this well into 2020," Burrell predicts. "Even if this means simply pressing corresponding glitter over your eyeshadow, or painting it along your eyeliner, it’s so easy and always magical. Lemonhead’s Glitter Pastes ($22) are always my mess-free and easy go-to when it comes to glitter."

Negative Space

"Makeup artists and makeup junkies alike are pushing themselves more and more, most likely out of boredom," Burrell notes. "There’s only so much warm, bronzey textbook glam we can look at daily. Negative space just means leaving part of the eye unpainted, usually it’s the lid with a bold cut crease. But you can try all kinds of shapes, lines, and colors. 2020 is all about stepping out of your comfort zone and getting creative."

Less Powder, More Dew

Says Ortega: "We are evolving from powder products, which are still good for certain things, to more beautiful, creamy, dewy skin. Skin is in, honey."
